Look, I’ll be the first to tell you that I’m not a coach.
But then the Kid has taken up running not more than a few months ago, is already running laps around me, and yet is leaning on her old man for support and advice as she works her way deeper into the sport. I’ve got twenty years of experience and since I started running shortly after she was born, still a babe in arms in fact, she doesn’t know me as anything but a guy who runs a lot.
Plus, she really hates asking AI for advice.
“How long until I need to replace my shoes?” She asked as we were out in the trails recently. She’s working, but not exactly in the running phase of buying equipment and gear she doesn’t absolutely need. She owns exactly one pair of trainers.
“They’ll last you about eight hundred klicks.” I said. “But with winter coming you may want to find a winter pair and keep these ones clean for the indoor track.”
“Right.” She agreed, and didn’t ask me anything more on the topic.
It’s dozens of little moment like this that nudge her in the right direction… or so I hope.
Not only have I never parented a teenage daughter before this one, I’ve never been a dad coach before either. I’m figuring this out as I go. And I’m probably going to make mistakes. Parenting, huh?
Definitions
- advice
- This is NOT an advice site. I write for entertainment only. Please see my note on advice in my page called "Some Notes" in the menu at the top of each page.
- klick
- As a Canadian I run in metric. As a writer, I find the word kilometre clunky and clinical. I'll usually use the colloquial "klick" or "klicks" to substitute in for this.
- the kid
- I'm father to a daughter who has often been mentioned in my writing. She's an adult now, but I'm still not going to dox her on this or any site. She'll remain as anonymous as I can make her and you shall only know her as "The Kid"
